Tirana, a city that not many know. It’s not exactly what you picture when you think of a European capital but does that mean it isn’t worth it? Absolutely not.

In fact, it’s exactly why it’s so exciting. It’s a city booming with raw character and one of Europe’s most affordable capital cities. It’s perfect for history fanatics, budget backpackers, food lovers and travellers looking for real authenticity.

If you’re wondering whether it’s worth adding to your itinerary, here is the honest truth about Tirana with things to do, where to go and the best day trips to take.

Things to Do

Tirana isn’t a city with major world-famous monuments to check off the bucket list. It’s a city full of life with important history and interesting structures. Here’s my recommendation of must see stops during your time in the city:

  • Bunk’Art: Two of the largest underground military bunkers from the Cold War have been transformed into historical and contemporary art museums. Bunk’Art 2 is in the centre of Tirana and Bunk’Art 1 is on the outskirts.

  • Skanderbeg Square: A huge pedestrian plaza in the heart of Tirana with contrasting views from a towering communist-era mural on the National Historical Museum next to an Ottoman-era Et’hem Bey Mosque with modern skyscrapers all around.
  • The Pyramid of Tirana: A striking, large and highly unexpected structure that sits right in the city. Now as a public space for relaxing and views of the city but originally, in 1988, it was built as an honorary museum for the late dictator.

  • Tirana Castle: Right in the centre of the city is the remains of Tirana Castle, also known as the Fortress of Justinian. Only a few vine-covered stone walls remain from the origin but it’s been wonderfully repurposed into an upscale, cobblestoned pedestrian alleyway filled with high-end restaurants, boutique shops and tasting rooms.
  • Tirana Lake Park: The perfect place for a long walk through peaceful nature. Most Albanians go for a ritual evening walk – xhiro – so you’ll find the place come alive in the evening.

Best Day Trips from Tirana

Tirana has some wonderful things to see and do but it also acts as a excellent day trip base for places nearby. Here are some of the best:

  • For Adventure: Lake Bovilla & Gamti Mountain. A rocky drive away from the city leads to this incredible turquoise reservoir surrounded by towering cliffs.
  • For History & Culture: Kruja. Take an hour local bus north and find yourself swept back in time to an old Ottoman bazaar, an impressive cliffside castle and Skanderbeg Museum.

  • For Nature: Mount Dajti. Located right on the edge of the city, it’s the easiest day trip. Take the cable car up and enjoy the impressive views at the top.
  • For Classic: Berat. A further drive on the highway and you’ll find this UNESCO town famous for its cascading white Ottoman houses and ancient living citadel. It’s possible to do in as a day trip but if you want to stay here overnight it’s absolutely perfect at night.

The Practical Guide: Food, Costs & Logistics

The boring, but essential, logistics to help you decide if Tirana is worth visiting. Here’s some important things to know:

  • Cash: Like the rest of Albania, the city relies mostly on cash so make sure you have enough. ATM fees aren’t always favourable for tourists so I would recommend exchanging cash from USD / GBP / EUR or finding an ATM without high fees and using “without conversion”.
  • Food: Albanian food is a perfect mix of light Mediterranean and hearty Balkan food. Tirana offers everything so don’t miss: byrek, tavë kosi, fërgesë, speca të mbushura, zgara and so many more. Be sure to go to the authentic bakeries and restaurants for the best quality and price.
  • Budget: For a European capital, Tirana is incredibly affordable. Those on a low budget can expect to spend as little as €35 a day whilst those with more to spend can spend anything upwards of this depending on restaurants, accommodation, transport and so on.
  • Transport: Tirana is easily walkable but if you need to go further out then the local public bus is 40ALL for one journey no matter the distance. Taxis are widely available but more costly.
  • Accommodation: The city offers everything from cheap hostels to nice hotels and Airbnb apartments. I’d recommend a privater apartment or a well-rated central hostel.

So, Is Tirana Worth Visiting?

In short, YES, absolutely.

Tirana isn’t your typical European capital so it’s important you don’t go with expectations of it being like Paris or Prague. But that’s exactly why you should go. It’s a city full of life, where history is still raw and unfiltered, and where brutalist communist concrete blocks contrast against modern skyscrapers.

I stayed in Tirana three separate times during my Albania trip, and experienced every side of the city. The first time, I stayed in a lovely little apartment – perfect but not the most budget-friendly. The second time, I stayed in a rooftop tent at a great, central hostel which was a crazy, unforgettable experience. The last time? I stayed in a cheap hostel on the outskirts of the city that easily takes the crown for the worst place I’ve ever stayed in my life. I could tell horror stories about it for hours – I won’t because it makes me feel unwell to even think about – but it did teach me a valuable lesson: sometimes paying more than €2.50 a night for a bed is well worth the investment! This will forever haunt me.

Anyway, even if you only spend a day or two in the city, I would highly recommend you experience Tirana and everything it offers for yourself. If you need more help planning your Albania trip then check out some of my other Albania posts.
